"Siamo famiglia" II

We would turn toward each other, probably a smile in our faces and most definitely visible amazement that a year went by since we dressed in boiler suit and apron-dress for the very first time.

"They will assume we're the cleaning staff" is how Dachil expressed his discomfort on March 21, 2015 when we were standing in front of the brightly lit citadel in Spandau, wearing overalls sporting the KUNSTASYL logo. We hesitated, then gathered speed to push among the audience with its satin glow and the shimmering of sequins in their eyes. They had come together for the spring reception of SPD Spandau raising their glasses to the newly elected governing mayor of Berlin.

Serdar, Dachil (back then he used to write Dakel), and Faris, three out of 100 inhabitants of the hostel at Staakenerstrasse, then Aymen, Therry, Till, and me. All of us had only just met, had gotten to know each other - the homeless and the domiciled - palpating intrinsic grounds. That very night would spark a fire. Every one of us remembered it now, when our arms were stretched in the air like magnetic needles, blue coated, pointing in all directions and when we returned to these seconds of silence at the very beginning of our project.

The only one missing was Faris. Him, who deliberately sank his childhood in the sea when 12 years old and never ceased to look for it over the last 12 years. At daHeim they used to call him "Bambino." Spiderman became his alter ego and at night he would nestle down in the spider web.

At present, next to the museum's wall, when one hands the brush to another, a gesture is repeated, the touching of fingertips. It used to be big back then. Today it goes without saying.

In front of the gateway, between KUNSTASYL banner and the flag of the museum for European cultures, Serdar and I were puffing our thoughts in the air, while resting. We took a breather; amazed by the fact that what had started a year ago at an industrial area in Spandau with the report of "Glances over Fluid Lives" was now taking form at the premises of the Museum for European cultures.
