"All about language“ – Ein Ausflug nach Bröllin

27.10.2015 onTours daHEIM

Wir fahren nach Brollin -

We are going to Broellin

The original is conversation between barbara and Dachil, transcribed by Dachil

Since two months, the cultural enclave is accommodating a group of Syrians, who left their native country just like the residents at daHEIM.

Natassa, an architect from Greece, had invited us to visit. She is in Germany for a month as a fellow of the stART program*.

Our encounter is an exchange of people on the run, some of which came to the city, others to the countryside.

Our main question is how humans, who had to flee, are able to build a connection to a foreign society in the countryside.

We meet with a group of young men between 20 and 30. The stories of Ammar, Mohammad, and Alaa sound familiar: they are similar to Serdar's, Omar's, and Mazin's narrative.

But how can one develop an idea of German reality out there? "You can not," they say

For the last four weeks they have been trying to answer this question together with Natassa.

Together they created their environment: the little square meters at their disposal are individually designed.

Furniture from the attic has added to individuality.

Wooden beds and warm lights create coziness within homelessness.

However, as soon as they obtain the necessary papers they will leave this place.

None of them wants to go to Berlin. They know that there are no more capacities in the city.

Only one of them knows exactly where he wants to go: Mohamed Nour, the man from Aleppo sees his future in Duesseldorf.

He knows, that the city is one of the most expensive German cities.

That does not scare him though. It might take years, he says, but then he will take up studies

He is under pressure. His family is still in Aleppo.

He could imagine a life in the countryside, Omar says on our way back to Berlin that same day.

But not for now. Only when his children are grown up and leave the house he would like to settle in a rural area together with Taghrid.

He likes the idea of being a self-sufficient farmer. However, from the
perspective of one who had to flee, he favors the city.

The Syrians in the countryside identify their neighborhood as "perfect." Yet, there is hardly any contact to the local community.

„Oh! So viele autos! So viele menschen!“. Der zwölf jährege atmit erleichtert auf. Auf dem land leben, mochte er nicht.
And what did Khaled say when we passed the city limits of Berlin? "Oh, so many cars! So many people!" The 12-year-old breathes a sigh of relief. He does not want to live in the countryside.

Stopover on our way to Broellin; side trip to Kunstgemeinde Pampsee (art community Pampsee): to Omar water means home - until 2014 the Syrian baker lived with his family in the seaport Latakia.

Visiting Pampsee. "Do you know everybody here?" Khaled asks me when we walk down the village's main street. Firstly, we knock on my former neighbor Anke's door.

Oswald and Wanda live Dorfstrasse 101. It is probably for the first time that Wanda welcomes visitors from Iraq, Syria, and Tunesia.

On our way to have lunch with Karin Völlm.

Karin's skills allow for a cooperation between Kunstgemeinde Pampsee and KunstAsyl: the knitting enthusiast will take part in the manufacture of KunstAsyl hats.

Visitors from far away take a break in downtown Pampsee: Dachil is 3.736 km away from his hometown Shingal; Khaled is from Damascus - 3.713 km off, Aymen used to live in Tunis which is 2.151 km away, and Omar baked bread 3.707 km away in Latakia until 2014.

Can one combine provisional living and comfort? Together with the inhabitants, the Greek architect Natassa questioned "arrival and habitation" in her experiment. Sleeping in beds of the Wilhelminian time were part of the experiment.

A bit of future: when crossing the ocean Alaa lost all he had. The only thing he could recover was his certificate of qualification for university matriculation. A blessing in disguise: the tattered piece of paper is his ticket to German university.
