19.12.2015 daHEIM HEIMart

Until the end of March 2016 the rooms at Quartiersmanagement (neighborhood management) Spandau-Neustadt are KunstAsyl (=ArtAsylum) too.

"212" - the largest installation - is dedicated to Latif, Endrit, Anita, Bedrie and Shaban in recognition of a family's nine months between hope and despair.

"I am from Kosovo. I used to live in a city called Podujeva near the capital. A river runs through Podujeva. Usually it is not very deep but sometimes when it rains it fills up with water and flows over its riverbed, flooding the city. That river has a name. It is called Llapi and this is why [people from other] cities call us the "Llapi." Sometimes we go swimming in a huge lake. It is called Batllava. The city I live in consists of 72 villages. Podujeva is the largest city in land area. There are mountains and forests. My favorite is to go visit see the village were my father was born!! …".
Text by Latif on the occasion of KunstAsyl tours at 48 Stunden Neukölln, 2015.

Since December 29, 2014 Bedrie, Shaban, Anita, Endrit, and Latif lived in room 212. The last postponement ended in the early morning of October 1, 2015. With their deportation. They returned to Podujeva. There is not much time left for those, who are to leave "escorted in the morning": within 30 minutes all belongings must be packed, suitcase and bag must not be more than 20 kg per person.

All that is left in the rooms is the shallow breath of extinguished hope and everything that would not fit into the hand luggage.

Vis-à-vis to clothing with the imprinted portraits of their owners, are "left overs": a series of objects that stayed in room 212. Latif recounts his escape from Kosovo to Berlin in a sound installation and pictures his feelings as asylum seeker in Germany.

One day after the vernissage, Bashkim and Gazi visit the installation. Already on the go, Bachkim says: "Today is my anniversary … a year ago I arrived in Hungary." Gazi adds: "Soon it will be my anniversary too: in a week I will at KunstAsyl for a year." Then he adds: "A hell of a year in one year."

"Glances in life" were planned and realized by Dachil Sado and barbara caveng.

The exposition is at Kurstrasse 5, Spandauer Neustadt, 13585 Berlin. Attendance is possible every day. Please call in advance or email: Tel. +49 30 2883 2228, team[at]qm-spandauer-neustadt[.]de
